On the face of it, I agree with you. It does strike me as a "Wha?" situation. Particularly with the caveat of "No gay stuff" most of them seem to put down.
But then I consider what they would say about our proclivities.
Then I thought about it more, about how the activity could be "not gay" and what sort of mindset would be required for that, and I guess I can see how it could be some sort of male bonding activity, sharing something that is typically "male" in its expression, etc, etc, etc. Which then sparks thoughts about the interesting perception/comfort people take in camraderie in all its forms...

Once you remove the sexual preconception off the act of masturbating, it is pretty easy to see how it can be "not gay." So, if masturbating is what you do when you don't have sex, then by extension it could be a non-sexual activity in itself.
Which helps to explain the male teen activity of "jerk off circles" as a form of competition/bonding.
Note: I'm not saying I share this perception, as I perceive masturbation to be a result of sex-drive. Just sharing that I can understand the mind-set
