She won! Woo-hooo! During the exhibition match yesterday she pinned a boy from the other team. Sadly, neither MLW nor I could make it to the match, so we didn't see it. *sigh*. So, in three matches, she's gone from being pinned to losing on points after three rounds to pinning the opponent. (she also said the hardest part was putting her face into his side, cause, apparently, he had no concept of personal hygiene.)

On the negative side, she said that the opposing coach wouldn't shake her hand, and the boy was incredibly dejected 'cause he lost to a girl. And then when she got home to her other house (that split custody thing), she ran downstairs to tell her step mom that she won, she was told "girls shouldn't wrestle." Argh.Damn argh.

She's bouncing high, though, and it's way cool. I think winning has put a whole new face on the whole "damn this is hard work" and "damn it's hard fighting social peer pressure" thing.

I wonder if she's gonna follow this up in high school?

It's that "raising individuals" thing. And of course we're proud. Damn fine social skillz and integrity that girl has.

I think someone should send a note to the principal of the opposing school about the whole no-handshake thing. Because that's just shitty.

Tell our gal she rocks, and that it's not inappropriate for girls to wrestle... it's just inappropriate for them to wrestle poorly.

Bwa-ha-ha!

A and I had a great talk Friday night for a couple of hours. One of the things that came up was the huge impact you and Alex and Rhy and Mac had on her growing up. Strong intelligent women that enjoy their lives.

Let's hear it for the next generation.

I'm seriously thinking about putting that on a t-shirt for her.

Dude, I'm serious, if you make me cry I'll smack you. :)

Hug her for me.. and tell her anytime she needs reinforcement on what kinds of things are "appropriate" for girls to do she should count how many of her female household members have their own swords. (I'm up to three so far... Cait and I have fencing swords and Courtney's got all those wooden smacky ones) I think no matter what you might call us, unfeminine is not one of them.

in my wife's class, she had this girl who went on to be an alternate as a pitcher in the girl's olympic softball team. (and if I have the team wrong, just put it down to me not listening quite well enough).

As a senior they had several days with not much to do after their exams and they played a kind of wiffleball with a folded paper ball. None of the boys could hit off of her. They made her pitch on her knees and she was still striking them out.

Thus in that class, "You throw like a girl," was responded with, "Why thank you."

That is SO admirable!!

What an amazing young woman you are rearing! Her strength of character is impressive, especially since she can't even count on the support of the adults in her life.

Someone suggested writing a letter to the principal of the other school. I'd seriously consider following up on that. Talk with your daughter about it first, so it doesn't blindside her, but tell her it's just unacceptable when adult professionals cannot exemplify the good sportsmanship and integrity they are supposed to be teaching.

Grrr!

Ack!

I meant "SOME" of the adults in her life, as far as being non-supportive.

I don't know her, but it seems like you and Mym are doing a great job of supporting her individuality.

And ... umm ... yeah, y'all are adults.

K.

(Shutting up now.)

patricia beat me to it

That is fantastic, and the opposing coach is a shithead. The stepmom doesn't impress me much, either.

I'm reminded of this Mark Twain quote:
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

The opposing coach did what? I would be on that school's principal like raw meat. Win, lose, or otherwise, you show that competitor some respect.

Anyway, aside from that, go her!

i will note that this put me in mind of the time [livejournal.com profile] justjenine's sister-in-law -- still a teenager at the time -- knocked a guy at a party out with a single punch to the face for calling her a bitch after she told him to get lost.

you gotta watch those Kiwi women. they're tough.

Merde told us about the wonderful accomplishment -- I just want to congratulate your daughter. Obviously girls wrestle -- she does. Silly step mom. I hope Squeaky is that strong -- both in this plane and the other -- when she's that old.

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL! GRRRR!

Good good work.

Yay her!! And yay you and Mom, obviously. (-:

On the "hard work" thing - HELL yeah! It's awesome positive reinforcement - that hard work and swimming upstream can have huge rewards (other than more hard work and more swimming upstream, of course!).

Three cheers for A!

Bwahaha!

Ugh, stinky boys! Way to go, Ana!
We recently bought a shirt that says "Wrestling: invented by men, perfected by women" for my coach, because he hates it. There is a shirt that I've seen that says "Hold my headgear while I kiss your girlfriend." I really want that one. *grins*
If she needs any help with a "Why girls should wrestle" argument, tell her to e-mail me and I'll send her pages and pages of reasons!
And again, kudos to her!
